Gritting and Snow Clearance

Part of the County Council's and District Council's Emergency Planning Response Team, we have a formal protocol agreement with Wyre Forest District Council. The Emergency Planning Protocol covers incidents such as flooding, flood prevention, heat waves and winter gritting and snow removal. As some of our Group's housing stock is at risk of flooding, we are the Groups response unit and provide jointly with the council sand bags and on site response to emergencies. An out of hour's response service is part of our core business activity.

Winter Gritting Service

We currently provide a winter gritting service to The Community Housing Group, servicing their sheltered housing schemes, strategic sites and offices totalling approx 22 locations which includes providing labour, equipment and route management and sundries (salt/grit). We also supply a similar service to 3 PFI (Private Finance Initiative Constructed and Managed Facilities) schools in association with the schools facility management company.

All of the above works are carried out on a priority basis from 5.00 am until completion.

Gritting and Snow Clearance Trigger Mechanisms

Our response to the above is triggered via the Met Office and Environment Agency which is connected to Wyre Forest District Council and we monitor 24 hours a day. We use other trigger mechanisms including local radio, internet based reports and communications with the County Council Highways Department.

We suggest applying grit, dependant on anticipated temperatures and the temperatures recorded over the proceeding period, taking into account not just air temperatures but ground temperatures which can trigger ice and slippery conditions. We agree a temperature trigger with the client, but we advocate taking a more comprehensive approach which takes into account; temperatures, site conditions, wind chill and future forecasting. All of the above is discussed with the client to deliver an effective service. We always ensure that we carry substantial grit stocks in ready filled bags, for ease of distribution.
